Two-way traffic restored on Route 8 bridge over Union Pacific Railroad

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – The bridge rehabilitation project on Missouri Route 8 over the Union Pacific Railroad in Washington County, near Potosi, is nearly complete and two-way traffic has been restored.

Construction crews working with the Missouri Department of Transportation were able to reopen the bridge to two-way traffic this afternoon, turning off the temporary signals that have moved traffic through the single open lane since March 2025

The project experienced several delays, including worker injuries, work stoppages requested by the railroad over which the bridge passes, and construction issues, pushing the project far past its original planned completion date in September 2025.

The contractor will be returning to install fencing at the site, but the date for that work has not yet been determined. During the fencing installation, short-term single-lane closures will be required.

As part of its September 2024 meeting, the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission awarded a $2,125,614.69 contract to S & A Equipment & Builders, LLC, to complete the rehabilitation of the bridge’s deck (driving surface).
